As we prepare for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year with circumstances surrounding COVID-19, a task force of parents, students, teachers, principals and administrators have been working to shape the upcoming year. For the 2020-21 school year, parents and students will be able to choose one of two options: In-person instruction with enhanced eLearning or the Darlington County Virtual Academy.

DCSD will offer in-person instruction with enhanced eLearning. Students will interact with teachers and other students in a traditional learning environment. The in-person model will also featured an enhanced eLearning component so learning can continue on inclement weather days or if pandemic numbers so require. DCSD will take all precautions and put into place the health and safety protocols recommended by the CDC and DHEC. This will include masks for all students in grades 3-12, proper distancing, adequate spacing between desks, regular cleaning and disinfecting of spaces, limited interactions with outside personnel, and other safety measures.

In response to the needs of our community, DCSD has added a new full-time virtual option, DCSD Virtual Academy, for students in grades 5K-12. Unlike eLearning, which was implemented under emergency conditions during last spring's school shutdown, students in the Virtual Academy will have a normal daily instructional schedule, earn grades, and receive timely teacher feedback in response to class or homework. DCSD teachers experienced in online platforms and virtual instruction will support student engagement using live and recorded lessons and tutorials. Students will be issued a laptop or iPad as grade appropriate. Students will need to have access to a reliable internet connection to participate in the Darlington County Virtual Academy.

Ensuring proper staffing levels for both our in-person and Virtual Academy will depend on an accurate count of our student enrollment in each option. In order to do this, students who enroll in the Virtual Academy will remain in the Virtual Academy for the entire school year. Students who desire to transfer back into an in-person school may be able to do so at the semester break in January, providing there is space available in the in-person school.

During the registration process, parents of new and returning students will be asked to choose the method of instruction they prefer for each child.
